EXTERNSHIP
PROGRAM
GOALS OF THE
PROGRAM
The Clinical Externship
program is designed to develop and enhance the following characteristics
of the students:
- Social awareness and skills needed in treating underserved populations.
Students experience problems and opportunities involved in providing
health care for people whose access to such care is limited by circumstances
of geography, economics, handicaps, etc.
- Knowledge and skills utilized in patient management and in certain
aspects of practice management.
- Clinical efficiency. Students are provided with an opportunity to
work in a one-to-one relationship with a preceptor which results in
the completion of an increasingly greater number of completed procedures
in a given time period.
- Professional competence and self-confidence. As a result of the close
relationship between students and preceptor, students will develop greater
confidence in their own clinical knowledge and abilities.
- Knowledge and skills involving research, scientific inquiry and public
policy relating to oral health.
