Frequently Asked Questions

As professionals we have the ability to make a difference in our society. We can be excited about these endless possibilities as we shape our professional self-images. Over the years, we have expanded our scope of community service activities at NJDS. From working with adults in a drug rehabilitation center, abused women in a program at Essex Community College to numerous preschools for underserved toddlers. In August 2007 NJDS students and faculty provided dental care and oral health promotion education to 180 residents of the HOPI Indian Reservation in Arizona. During the course of the week, 414 separate dental procedures were performed. Everyone walked away with a very rewarding experience!

There are countless ways NJDS has changed the oral health of those in need and will continue to do so. Community outreach enhances our sense of self. Many of you have expressed that doing such work was more enjoyable and rewarding than you ever thought possible—it is contagious.

In the fall of 2007, it became mandatory that dental students provide four hours of dental-related community service each academic year. After all, we want to teach that service for others is part of our professional responsibilities. This website will act as a guide to the program.

As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said: ”Anybody can be great because everybody can serve.”

Please feel free to contact us with any questions or concerns. We look forward to serving with you.

Deb Goldsmith, Diana Kressner, & Dr. Hillary Broder
