In order to establish a self-sustaining scholarship, $25,000 is required. This year's recipient: Lauren Hebel '99 New President for the Foundation of UMDNJMichael S. Bassoff is the new president of the Foundation of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Previously, he was executive director of development at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. NJDS Provides a Helping Hand for KidsWhether making oral health part of a fun game at the Happy Tooth Carnival, running the Children's Dental Health Fair at the Turtleback Zoo, or keeping Special Olympics athletes in top dental form, NJDS faculty, students, and alumni are involved in many facets of community health outreach to young people. Last June, for example, about 300 UMDNJ volunteersincluding
NJDS faculty and alumni, allied health personnel, and community
optometrists, dentists, and lay persons, were on hand at the
New Jersey Special Olympics event. They were part of UMDNJ's
Sports and Wellness Park, through which more than 1,400 athletes
received dental health examinations, oral health instruction,
height/ weight evaluations, blood pressure screenings, eye and
hearing evaluations, nutritional counseling, and strength and
flexibility tips. Athletes received sports mouth guards, protective
eyewear, Colgate toothbrushes, Total® toothpaste, and other
health-related goodies. The Park was sponsored by cash grants
from the Colgate-Palmolive Company and the Foundation of UMDNJ. 1999 OKU Scholarship Golf Classic
