Excellence Rewarded
for Dean's List Students
Last October, Acting Dean Cecile Feldman hosted the 2nd Annual
Dean's Scholarship Reception. Through the efforts of Omega Omega
Chapter of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a "Dean's List" was
created to recognize scholastic achievement by dental students
at New Jersey Dental School. More than 50 students from the Classes
of 2000, 2001, and 2002 received certificates from Dr. Feldman
for achieving a grade point average at or above 3.5.

Nila Leon Named
as DAA Coordinator
A Familiar Face in a New Place
Anything that is a concern to New Jersey Dental School alumni
is now a concern to Nilda Leon. She's the new Dental Alumni Association
Coordinator at the school.
Ms. Leon, who began her new position in March, has worked at
NJDS for 13 years. She most recently was the administrative coordinator
for the Division of Endodontics. She also worked in various secretarial
positions within the school's Department of Prosthodontics and
Biomaterials and Office of Student Affairs. Ms. Leon replaces
Carolyn Dennis-Phillips.
"As the Alumni Association Coordinator, Nilda is ready and
willing to assist all alumni with any question or problem,"
says Dr. Peter DeSciscio ('85), president of the Dental Alumni
Association. "She is a tremendous asset to our association
and to the New Jersey Dental School."

Dr. Ricciani Appointed
to N.J. State Board of Dentistry
Dr. John Ricciani ('70) was appointed to the New Jersey State
Board of Dentistry last September by Governor Christie Todd Whitman.
Dr. Ricciani, a clinical assistant professor in the Department
of General Dentistry and Community Health, is also vice regent,
District IV, of the International College of Dentists. He is
Fellow of the International College; the American College of
Dentists; the Pierre Fauchard Academy; the
Academy of General Dentistry; and the Academy of Dentistry Internationale.
He also chairs the New Jersey Dental Association's Credentials
Committee.
The new board member practices and resides in Trenton, New Jersey.
Dr. Richard Vogel
('71) has a new career as executive associate dean at New York
University, College of Dentistry.
Dr. Richard Vogel ('71), former chairman of the Department
of Oral Pathology, Biology and Diagnostic Sciences (OPBDS), has
a new career as executive associate dean at New York University,
College of Dentistry.
"It was a bittersweet decision," says Dr. Vogel, who
began his new job in January. "I have been part of New Jersey
Dental School for over 30 years and was saddened to leave, but
I simply could not pass up the challenge to help build a new
undergraduate dental program at NYU."
Dr. Vogel was also the acting associate dean of academic affairs
and taught in the pre-doctoral and post-doctoral dental programs
at NJDS. While at the school, he was the principal investigator
for more than 10 research grants and the primary author of more
than 30 scientific articles and 20 abstracts.

Dr. Daniel Fine
is serving as the acting chairman of OPBDS.
After 27 years at New Jersey Dental School, Dr. Wayne T. Harris
has decided that his next implant will be the Jersey tomatoes
in his garden.
Dr. Harris is the former chairman of the Department of Fixed
Prosthodontics and founder and director of the post-graduate
prosthodontics program. In retirement, he plans to pursue some
of his hobbies, which include sailing, woodworking, and of course,
gardening. Dr. W. Ralph Opderbeck, associate professor of Endodontics,
is retiring on June 2. He has been a faculty member since 1974;
in 1978 he received the Excellence in Teaching award. Dr. Opderbeck
was also a group practice administrator from 1989 to 1996. Another
colleague from the Division of Endodontics, Dr. Martin Cameron,
retired in February.
Dr. Cameron joined the NJDS faculty in 1990 and became an associate
professor in 1994. He was also an adjunct assistant professor
of Anatomy, Cell Biology, and Injury Sciences at New Jersey Medical
School.
