Participants
provided dental screenings, oral hygiene instrucion and fabricated
dental mouthguards for the more than 550 athletes who visited
Special Smiles, one of the seven Special Olympics Healthy Athletes
initiatives created to focus attention on the overall health issues
facing Special Olympics athletes. "The mission of Special
Smiles is to increase access to dental care for Special Olmpics
athletes, as well as all people with intellectual disabilities,"
explains Dr. James Delahanty ('75), clinical director of the NJ
Special Smiles program.
In addition,
participants received AGD and ADA-recognized continuing education
credits in exchange for their participation. Helping with this
year's CE program was Dr. Lawrence Dobrin ('75), Chief Forensic
Dentist-Office of the Medical Examiner, NYC and NJDS Assistant
Dean, Dr. Arnold Rosenheck. Dr. Dobrin presented "Child
Abuse: Primary Intervention by the Dental Team" and Dr. Rosenheck presented "Prevention & Early Detection of Oral Cancer
in the Special Needs Population."
