The Special Care Treatment Center is a subdivision within the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and provides comprehensive dental care to mentally and physically challenged patients. Staff dentists provide care to these patients as either outpatients at the New Jersey Dental School or within University Hospital operating rooms under general anesthesia. The Center sees approximately 50 new patients per month, of which almost half are scheduled for treatment in the operating rooms. Our center is one of the few locations in the State where patients are provided this specialized level of care; hence, patients from all over the state are referred to this Center of Excellence for their oral health needs.

In a collaborative effort with the Division of Hospital Dentistry, the Special Care Treatment Center has created a residency position for general dentistry residents to manage patients with physical and/or mental challenges. This is one of the few such programs available throughout the country. A rotation for dental students has been established through the Center with operating room observation opportunities available and incorporation into the formalized student curriculum.
