Internationally Trained DMD Program

  1. Introduction
    The Internationally Trained DMD Program at the New Jersey Dental School is designed to enable qualified dentists educated outside the United States or Canada to earn a Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree following a special 27 months didactic and clinical program.

  2. Eligibility
    The NJDS Internationally Trained DMD Program has been developed for individuals who have completed the equivalent of a DMD or DDS program in a non-US or Canadian accredited dental school. It is intended for individuals who would be interested in pursing a dental career in the US or who would be interested in returning to their country with additional skills acquired in a US accredited DMD program. This program is open to U.S. citizens, permanent residents, as well as international students.

Application Procedure

All applications to the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School are filed through the Centralized Application for Advanced Placement for International Dentists, (CAAPID). Applications for NJDS Internationally Trained DMD Program may be filed from April 16 to October 19 for matriculation in the following year. Orientation and the Summer Program will begin in April.

NO SUPPLEMENTAL APPLICATION IS REQUIRED
The New Jersey Dental School does not use a supplemental application, however, there is a non-refundable $250.00 application fee made payable to UMDNJ for the processing of your application. The $250.00 application fee should be sent directly to the school only when contacted by an Admissions Officer. THE DENTAL SCHOOL IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR DELAYS IN CAAPID'S PROCESSING OF THE APPLICATION, WHETHER DUE TO THEIR ERROR OR STUDENT ERROR. All credentials submitted to the New Jersey Dental School to support an application for admission become the property of the Dental School and will not be returned.

INTERVIEWS and BENCH TEST

Selected candidates will be invited for an interview and bench test, only at the discretion of the Admissions Committee. An interview and /or bench test will not be granted at the request of the student. No candidate will be accepted without an interview and bench test.
If invited for an interview and bench test, there will be a $125.00 administrative and clinical utilization fee.

NOTIFICATION

All candidates are informed electronically of the action taken on their applications. The time for notification of status is set at the discretion of the Admissions Committee.

  • If offered admission, applicants are required to submit a nonrefundable tuition deposit of $2,500.00.

All in-state and out-of-state International Dentist Program students are required to pay their annual tuition and fees, in full, 30 days prior to each academic year. Academic year is defined as:
1. Summer Program
2. Fall/Spring-third year
3. Fall/Spring-fourth year

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q. When does the application process begin?
A. The Office of Admissions will begin accepting applications between April 16 to October 19 for the class entering in the spring of the following year. It is strongly recommended that applications be submitted as early in the admissions cycle as possible.

Q. Are both the National Board Dental Examination (NBDE) Part I and II required in order to be considered for the New Jersey Dental School International Dentist Program (IDP)?
A. Yes.  All applicants must submit an official board score report, demonstrating the successful completion of both part I and II. An application will not be processed without this information.
 
Q. How will applicants be notified if selected for an interview?
A. Those applicants who are selected for an interview will be notified electronically with all the necessary information concerning the interview process. All candidates are expected to confirm their attendance for the interview.

Q. How many students are enrolled into the International Dentist Program annually?
A. Twenty-six individuals are enrolled into the IDP program each year.

Q. What are acceptable forms of proof of receiving a dental degree?
A. Applicants are required to submit a notarized copy of his/her official dental school diploma as proof of receiving a dental degree.

Q. Do I have to be a New Jersey resident and/or a U.S citizen?
A. No. The IDP is open to all qualified international trained dentists.

Q. Does NJDS have a minimum required National Board Score for both part I & II and the TOEFL?
A. No, however due to the competitive nature of the application process, applicants with stronger credentials are given preference in the selection process.
