Introduction

The Master of Science in Dentistry and Master of Dental Science programs provide advanced academic training for those students, enrolled in UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School's graduate dental education specialty programs, who want to broaden their understanding of the biological sciences on which their clinical practice is based. These programs include core courses in Foundation of Oral Biology and Advanced Biomedical Science for Dentistry, as well as specialized courses in Oral Immunology, Microbiology, Metallic Systems in Dental Biomaterials Science, Polymeric Systems in Biomaterials Sciences and Scanning Electron Microscopy. All course work addresses issues specific to each dental specialty program, thereby, enriching the students' experience in their specialties. Students in the Master of Science in Dentistry program complete a hands-on research project, while students in the Master of Dental Science program complete an extensive literature review. DMD and DDS prepared individuals who are accepted into a UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School graduate dental education specialty program will be able to apply to either of the Masters programs at the time of their application to the graduate dental specialty program or during the first year of that program. Students pursue either of the masters programs simultaneously with a UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School graduate dental education specialty program, and can complete their chosen masters program within a two to three year time frame, either coterminous with the graduate dental specialty program or after one to three additional years.

Admission Requirements:

US and Canadian students

Degrees Offered:

The Master of Science in Dentistry program is designed to train students for a career in academic dentistry focused on research. To accomplish this objective, each student completes a thirty-credit program comprising eighteen didactic credits and a twelve-credit thesis/research project. Core competencies for the Master of Science in Dentistry include developing skills in research:

  • thesis formulation including an extensive literature review to support thesis topic.
  • innovative problem-solving techniques
  • lab and/or clinic-based experimentation
  • data collection
  • data analysis
  • statistical validation of conclusions
  • thesis completion and oral defense

The Master of Dental Science program is designed to give students a more in-depth understanding of the biological processes underlying their clinical specialty. The program is for students who want to learn to interpret the literature, and evaluate and criticize current practices. It is not intended for those students who want to pursue a research-based thesis project. The objective of the program is to enable the students to become critical thinkers and evaluators of best practices in dentistry. To accomplish these objectives, each student will have to complete a thirty-credit didactic program. Core competencies for the Master of Dental Science include:

  • selection of a relevant clinical question
  • selection of parameters for evidence-based review of the literature related to clinical question at hand
  • extensive computer-based research
  • data analysis
  • interpretation of literature through evidence-based practice
  • critical evaluation of current practices
  • presentation of an evidence-based research report on current practices

Credit Requirements

  1. 18 credits for didactic courses. This includes 6 credits transferred from courses taken in dental school, 8 credits from the specialty required core courses, and 2 credits from the research seminar series. The remaining 2 credits can be taken from electives to be offered in the program as determined necessary by the student's committee. Four additional credits may be required. Additional credit requirement will depend on thesis topic chosen for study.
  2. 12 credits (7 for research work and 5 for the thesis)
  3. A minimum of 30 and maximum of 34 credits may be taken. The time required to earn the masters degree may extend beyond the specialty program length.

Thesis Advisory Committee

The thesis advisory committee consists of two members of the Oral biology Department, the mentor and the Program Director of the student's specialty program. This committee meets on, at least, a semi-annual basis to monitor the student's progress.

Thesis Examination Committee

The thesis examination committee consists of the Thesis Advisory Committee and at least one additional member with expertise in the thesis project area.
