Student National Dental Association of NJDS Volunteers at the Newark Kid's Cafe

by Lezli Levene Harvell (Class of 2006)

On September 26th, 2003, the Student National Dental Association (SNDA) of New Jersey Dental School volunteered their time and expertise at the Kid's Café on Springfield Avenue in Newark. The Kid's Café is an after school and day care program sponsored by the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. The program provides meals and snacks to needy children throughout the state of New Jersey. The members of SNDA discussed the importance of proper brushing habits with the children. The students were also instructed on the proper brushing technique through the use of puppets. Following the demonstration the participants were given an opportunity to use the puppets to illustrate to the members of SNDA what they learned. At the end of the program each child was given a bag containing toothpaste, a toothbrush and a sticker.
