The Center provides a broad range of services for physical and mental health, including:
These services are provided by a Board Certified Family Physician and Addiction Specialist, as well as a Board Certified Psychiatrist and a licensed Psychotherapist. Services are provided in a "student only" private office located on the Newark campus of UMDNJ. All services are completely confidential. The Center is open from 7:30am to 5:00pm, Monday through Friday. Office hours are by appointment only, however, requests for same day appointments for acute illnesses are usually honored. Evening, weekend and holiday coverage for the Center is provided by board-certified Family Physicians from the Department of Family Medicine. STUDENT ORGANIZATIONSAt New Jersey Dental School, students are involved in the many social, professional and educational activities, which exist outside of the normal dental academics. All students are members of the American Student Dental Association (ASDA), a national organization of dental students that is associated with the American Dental Association (ADA). In addition, some students elect to join other student organizations, which are listed and described below. Student also benefit from their membership in the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), which provides helpful materials for the dental educational experience. There are many social and athletic activities throughout the year, the most notable being the annual winter dance. Students are involved in much of the decision-making at NJDS with voting representatives on certain faculty and administrative committees. 1. Student Government Association (SGA). The SGA is the main governing body of the students. The charge of this organization is to uphold the general well being of the student body, provide proper management of student affairs and maintain the obligations and responsibilities of dental students. The representation on the SGA consists of (1) an elected Board of Officers which includes the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer; (2) a Representative Council which includes the President and three representatives from each class; and (3) specifically elected representatives of each student organization. of the Student Government Association 2. Fraternities and Fauchard Dental Society of New Jersey. Three dental fraternities, Alpha Omega, Gamma Pi Delta, and Xi Psi Phi as well as the Fauchard Dental Society of New Jersey have large and active chapters at the New Jersey Dental School. The fraternities and Society offer social as well as tutorial, clinical and other educational services to their members. 3. American Student Dental Association (ASDA). ASDA is an association, which constantly addresses the needs and interests of its members and the public whom they serve. ASDA helps in facilitating the process by which students can become active participants in professional affairs and activates constructive and progressive change where necessary. 4. The Student National Dental Association (SNDA). SNDA was founded as an organization of minority dental students to speak to current issues such as recruitment/retention of minorities, and future issues confronting minorities in organized dentistry. The local chapter of SNDA at NJDS sponsors community-oriented activities as well as social and other educational services to its members. 5. The Hispanic Student Dental Association (HDA). HDA meets regularly to conduct business and address issues relating to all students, but particularly Hispanic students, through a peer initiative program. 6. The Indian Student Dental Association (ISDA). ISDA is an association founded by South Asian dentists to represent their interests in the field of dentistry. The student chapter welcomes all students and is active in community service activities. The organization aims to improve knowledge of oral health through varied community connections. 7. The American Academy of General Dentistry (AAGD). AAGD was founded to introduce junior and senior dental students to organized dentistry, continuing education, and to instill the concept of life-long learning. 8. The American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD). AAWD was founded to represent the specific interests of women in dentistry. The local chapter hosts lectures, participates in community service activities, and fosters mentoring for women dental students with the goal of developing women in the profession of dentistry. 9. The New Jersey Student Dental Society (NJSDS). NJSDS is the student component of the New Jersey Dental Association. Every student is a member of the organization. Its goal is to encourage dental students to learn and take part in the political aspects of dentistry. The student chapter works closely with NJDA on issues affecting the dental profession. HOUSINGUMDNJ is building dormitory facilities for students on its Newark campus. The Office of Admissions along with the Office of Student Affairs directs students to local realtors and rental agencies who have demonstrated willingness to assist students. Each year, a list of students seeking roommates is compiled and made available to other interested students by the Office of Admissions. Students can access

There are also libraries for dental student use on the New Brunswick, Stratford and Camden campuses. You may visit the George F. 2. Electronic Journals Over 200 full-text journals are available to UMDNJ faculty, students and staff room on-campus or remote locations. To view the various lists of electronic journals, visit one of the campus library home pages listed above to see detailed listings. 3. Campus Library Services Each campus library provides comprehensive reference assistance, extensive collections of print books and journals in the health sciences, microcomputer labs, interlibrary loan services and instruction in the use of resources and electronic services. Each campus library collection is comprised of books, journals, media and software in the basic and clinical sciences. The collections support curricular, research and patient care needs of the students, faculty and staff. A variety of electronic forms are available on each of the campus library home pages to provide ease of use for our students and faculty. 4. Circulation Policies All patrons must register with the Library in order to borrow materials, search databases or use microcomputer resources. ID badges will be bar coded upon registration. Your ID badge must be presented when requesting materials from the Reserve Collection or when signing out materials. Borrowing periods for Library materials will vary based on your primary campus library policies. 5. Reference Services Professional reference service is available Monday through Friday. A full range of library services is provided by staff who aid users in obtaining information. Students requiring guidance in the use of the online catalog, assistance in locating books, journals and computer software or orientation to services and programs provided by the Library can obtain this information from the reference staff. Library users are encouraged to learn to do their own computerized literature searches using any of the searching options the Library has available. The Library provides mediated literature searches for patrons who are interested in this fee-based service. In addition to MEDLINE and other biomedical databases, the Library staff can provide searches of databases in other areas of science, technology, business, arts, humanities, education and current events. 6. Interlibrary Loan Interlibrary loan is a service provided to obtain materials, which are not available at our campus library. Books, audiovisuals and some materials in microform may be borrowed. Photocopies may be requested for non-circulating materials, e.g., reference books, reserve materials, journals, etc. Allow at least one week from the date submitted to receive materials. Items available in other UMDNJ libraries may be received sooner. Interlibrary loan request forms are available at the Circulation Desk. The Library will make every effort to obtain items at no coast to the patron, however, some items may require pre-payment of loan fees up to $10. 7. Classes Each campus library offers classes and training opportunities for students. Bi-monthly class schedules are posted on the web and appear as part of the UMDNJ Technology Training catalog. Specialized classes and individual or small group training sessions can be arranged through the reference librarians on each campus. UMDNJ BOOKSTORENick Gianamas, Manager The Matthews Medical Book Store at UMDNJ, Newark, features 3,000 square feet of medical reference titles, review books, course books, study aids and medical supplies. Featuring a state-of-the-art computer system, Matthews is able to fill customer needs by providing a huge selection of medical, dental and allied health reference titles as well as gifts and clothing with the UMDNJ logo. The bookstore is located at 186 West Market Street, across from the University plaza. It is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., weekdays, and 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Saturday. (Master, Visa, American Express and Discover Cards are accepted.) The bookstore web site is: http://webmedbooks.com/umdnj/default.aspx DIGITAL MEDIA SERVICESAnn Lippel, Director, Digital Media Services 973-972-5488 The Digital Media Services is the University-wide instructional multi-media production facility. Its primary mission is to produce and distribute an array of multi-media materials and support aids to the University's educational programs. The department provides production-planning services to assist the faculty and staff in the development of media teaching materials and assists those involved in research and training by producing appropriate visuals. The services rendered by the department include high-resolution imaging, design, medical illustration, computer-generated slides and overhead projection transparencies, and a variety of graphic art services. Also offered at this department is biomedical photography with the inclusion of color and black-and-white original productions, photomicrography, photocopy, slide duplication, location and studio photography, including portraiture, public relations, patient and surgery photography, along with film, slide and print processing. The Digital Media Service is located in the dental school building in Room B-725, behind the Student Lounge. CHAPLAINSThe Department of Pastoral Care is located in University Hospital, Room D-344. You may call the Pastoral Care Department directly at (973) 972-2668 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. The Director of Pastoral Care and the volunteer chaplains are available to students for counseling and to serve as a resource for those seeking personal assistance. The Chapel is located in Univeristy Hospital Room D-345, and is open 24 hours a day. A schedule of religious services is posted outside of the chapel. For further information, please call (973) 972-5668. FOOD SERVICESA cafeteria, which accommodates faculty, students and staff, is located on the B-level in University Hospital. Meals are served during the following hours: Breakfast
6:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. Frozen kosher food is available for purchase and vending machines in the cafeteria offer a variety of foods 24 hours a day. The dental school Student Lounge has vending machines that dispense cold and hot drinks. RECREATIONThe gymnasium of the University Hospital, located on campus, is available at specified times and can be used for basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The dental school organizes basketball and softball leagues where dental student play against students from other schools as well as staff and faculty. The student lounge is located on the B Level in the dental school. There are comfortable chairs and tables, vending machines and pool tables. DENTAL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
James L. Delahanty, D.M.D., EdM Alumni Office Administrator 973-972-6883 The Dental Alumni Association was established in 1960 when the Charter Class graduated from the Seton Hall University College of Medicine and Dentistry. A representative of the senior class sits as a nonvoting member of the Association's Executive Committee in order to increase communication between the dental school and its past and present students. The Association has as its principal purpose the furtherance of the dental school's progress and future growth, not only in a financial way, but also by taking an active role in the school's development. Each year, the Association awards twelve $1000.00 scholarships to dental students based on need, academic achievement and leadership, sponsors two students with $2000.00 summer research fellowships, and award emergency loans. It also organizes receptions for alumni, faculty and students at major dental meetings, sponsors various fund-raisers, and other social events. CENTER FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION IN THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS
Janice L. Gibbs, M.A., Director 973-972-6561 The UMDNJ-Center for Continuing Education in the Health Professions is a University-wide Center servicing each of the seven component schools. The Center provides learning opportunities for all practicing health professionals. The ultimate objective of the Center is to contribute toward the improvement of health care through the continual education of dentists, physicians, nurses and other professionals in the health associated sciences as well as the public. The UMDNJ-Center for Continuing Education has a division based in the dental school. The growth and expansion of the profession makes today's dentists life-long learners. The division presents conferences, seminars, symposia, workshops and courses for all dental professionals in the latest diagnostic, preventive and treatment knowledge and techniques. The opportunity for students to attend continuing education programs is available through an elective offered to senior students. The Division of Continuing Dental Education encourages all dental students to take part in the many educational activities offered by the division. |
