Q: How was I selected to be a tutor? A: Tutors are selected by the course director. They tend
to be students that have done well in the course and who the course
director thinks will make an effective tutor
Q: How do student(s) contact me? A: Students requesting tutoring come to Student Affairs.
They can contact tutors via email.
Q: Who arranges the time and date to meet? A: The student and the tutor directly arrange the meeting
times and dates. It is most effective if the topics to be covered are
identified before setting a time.
Q: How do I prepare for tutoring sessions? A: Tutors should review the material the student identified
for extra attention about 10 minutes for every hour of tutoring.
Q: Can I tutor in groups? A: Yes.
Q: How am I supposed to tutor? A: The student should prepare a summary of their difficulties
in advance. It is best to assist them by having them explain concepts
and then asking open ended questions to probe for further comprehension.
Avoid long lectures, provide simple and direct explanations. It is also
helpful to assist them in gleaning out what is important to focus on
from the rest of the material taught in lecture.
Q: How am I paid? A: Tutors must hand in the time tracking sheets every
2 weeks. The Office of Student Affairs puts in for a check to be cut
once significant hours have been accumulated. The check will be placed
in the tutor's mailbox.
Q: What should I do if I feel overwhelmed or run out
of time? A: Please come in and tell Pat Wagner to suspend
your tutoring. You can restart at a later point if you are able to.
Q: What do I do if I have problems or questions? A: Stop in to the Office of Student Affairs and speak
to either Ms. Pat Wagner or Ms. Jeanette DeCastro. You can also
speak to the course director if you have problems directly related to
the course material.
