PRACTICE RESIDENCY General Information As New Jersey's preeminent academic health care facility, the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) has a primary obligation to provide the best possible health care to a wide variety of patients. The second obligation is the provision of high quality training to the country's health care practitioners. The General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the UMDNJ-New Jersey Dental School aims to fulfill these obligations in the field of general dentistry. The Newark campus of UMDNJ is home to the New Jersey Medical School, the New Jersey Dental School (NJDS), the School of Health Related Professions, the Graduate School for Biomedical Sciences, the School of Nursing, and the University Hospital. The hospital, a tertiary liver disease center and state trauma center, represents a major teaching site for medical and dental students and residents to work in a technically advanced, academically challenging environment. UMDNJ GPR Program Objectives The GPR program at UMDNJ is a one-year program dedicated to elevating the skills and knowledge base of the dental graduate in both General and Hospital dentistry. This educational program is designed to provide the general dentist with advanced knowledge and skills that will enable him/her to develop a successful and productive career as a general practitioner with the necessary skills to provide dental care in a hospital setting. These objectives are achieved by integrating a unique clinical and didactic program only available through a dental school/hospital based program. The first year residents (PGY1) will receive:
Program Faculty Part-time and full-time faculty from the Department of Diagnostic Sciences and faculty from the other postgraduate departments provides a wide range of expertise from which the residents can take full advantage of. Cohen, DDS Eli Eliav, DMD, PhD Mahnaz Fatahzadeh, DMD Thomas Giusto, DDS Gary Hartwell, DDS Gary Heir, DMD Michael Krakow, DMD Joseph Luzzo, DMD Ival McDermott, DMD Richard Pertes, DDS Diane Rigassio-Radler, RD, PhD Davis Thomas, DDS Riva Touger-Decker, RD, PhD Educational Activities Each resident is expected to attend all academic activities scheduled by the department. Residents and faculty will receive a monthly schedule of conferences to allow adequate time for preparation. The graduate will also be proficient in scientific evaluation of the literature and application of this knowledge to their future practices. On-Call Responsibilities Nightly on-call duty is shared equally by all first year GPR & Pediatric Dentistry Residents on a rotating basis throughout the year, except the off-service month of Internal Medicine. The chief resident is responsible for call assignment and ensuring that residents have equal call distribution for weekends and holidays. Rounds Both the post-call and incoming on-call residents participate in the morning rounds in the Oral Medicine conference room. This allows for inpatient follow-up and exchange of information about admitted and/or referred emergency patients. Interesting ER cases and consults are also discussed during morning rounds. Head and Neck Tumor Board Tumor Board is a weekly multidisciplinary conference attended by General Practice Residents, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Otolaryngology, Radiology, Pathology, Social Services, Radiation Oncology and Medical Oncology. Individual services present new and interesting cases for group discussion and comprehensive management of head and neck cancer patients. Off-Service Rotations GP residents have two to four-week block rotations through: Anesthesia, Internal Medicine, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Special Care Dentistry. These rotations provide dental residents with experience in dental medical risk assessment, emergency patient management and interaction with other health care professionals.
