POSTGRADUATE PROSTHODONTICS
PROGRAM GOALS
- To educate dentists to become competent
specialists in prosthodontics.
- To prepare students to contribute to and
pursue the broad body of basic and applied knowledge related to oral and
systemic health.
- To prepare students for examination by the
American Board of Prosthodontics.
- To encourage students to disseminate information
after graduation about the skills involved with the specialty of
prosthodontics.
GENERAL INFORMATION
The
36-month postgraduate program in prosthodontics was begun in 1978 to provide
postdoctoral education for dentists wishing to prepare for specialized
practice. Clinical expertise is
strongly emphasized and the program prepares the student for successful
attainment of Board Certification.
The program offers a Certificate in Prosthodontics and a Master of Dental
Science degree.
SELECTION
CRITERIA
All
applicants must have earned a DMD/DDS degree from a United States or Canadian
dental school or a foreign dental degree such as a BDS. All applicants must pass Part I of the
National Board examinations with a grade above 75%. Passage of Part II is not a requirement
but adds favorable support to the applicant. Licensure in the United States is
required if eligible. Foreign
applicants must also attain a respectable score on the TOEFL examination and be
eligible to obtain foreign student status. Preferential consideration will be given
to applicants with high academic accomplishments and other significant awards
as noted in curriculum vitae, e.g., advanced degrees, publications, research
activities to name a few. Final acceptance will be made by the prosthodontic faculty
interview committee following the interview and skill assessment process.
FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS
The
Prosthodontics Postgraduate Program has financial obligations consistent with
the annual tuition rate of all University of Medicine
and Dentistry of New Jersey graduate programs.
PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
The
Prosthodontics Postgraduate Program at University of Medicine and Dentistry of
New Jersey - New Jersey Dental School is a complex prosthodontic program
encompassing all the prosthodontic disciplines to include Fixed Prosthodontics,
Removable Partial Dentures, Complete Dentures, Maxillofacial Prosthetics, and
Implant Therapy, both in the didactic and clinical curriculum. The guidelines set for clinical
accomplishments are as follows:

200 units |
Complete Denture Prosthodontics |
30 units |
Removable Partial Dentures |
15 units |
Implants Restored |
150 fixtures |
Maxillofacial Prosthetics |
5 cases |
These guidelines
include 3 full mouth rehabilitations, use of attachments, and all ancillary
prosthetic procedures. Students are
required to use various clinical techniques and demonstrate competency in most
laboratory procedures.
Didactic requirements include pre and post testing, preparation of three
(3) lectures, and an original research project and report. Students are also required to present a
table clinic, poster presentation or an original paper at major prosthodontic
meetings. Successful completion of
the program may require an extension beyond 36 months to fulfill clinical
requirements. Teaching experience
during the program is required and determined by the faculty as the
postgraduate students demonstrate proficiency and confidence and is limited to
one-half (½) day per week, during the third-year of postgraduate
training. Participation in the
American Board of Prosthodontics (Part I) is mandatory and all 3 board cases must be completed during the program and
presented in a Mock Oral Board. Mock Board written examination will be administered each year.

Treatment Planning Knowledge of Clinical Cases and Psychomotor skills. All expenses incurred during this
interview process will be the responsibility of the applicant.

vacations will be permitted up to one (1) month each year for the first two
years, two weeks only in PGY-3. The times designated for vacation
will be two (2) weeks during August and two (2) weeks during December Holiday

all three-cases required for ACP Board certification.
Upon completion of the program the graduate student will be:
-
Proficient in diagnosis, treatment planning,
treatment sequencing of complex prosthodontic restorations - fixed, removable,
complete dentures, implant dentistry
-
Competent in the treatment of and rehabilitation of
the maxillofacial prosthetic patients
-
Proficient in the selection and use of various
precision and semi-precision attachments
-
Proficient in full mouth rehabilitation
-
Proficient in advanced clinical procedures to
