Students / Prospective Students / Postdoctoral / Other Programs / Oral Infectious Disease Fellowship ORAL INFECTIOUS DISEASE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM The Oral Infectious Disease Program at the New Jersey Dental School is an intensive one-year postgraduate fellowship program dedicated to advanced training in the dental management of patients with infectious diseases. This clinical training program is designed to provide the general dentist with advanced knowledge and dental skills that will enable him/her to proficiently provide comprehensive oral health care to a variety of patient populations with infectious diseases including HIV and hepatitis. This intensive clinical program integrates extensive didactic with clinical training to provide the Fellow with an evidence based, practical armamentarium necessary for the scholarly practice of dentistry. The Fellows receives training in:
Patients are treated in the Oral Medicine Clinic located in the New Jersey Dental School. Each Fellow will be required to complete a one-month rotation on the Infectious Diseases Service in the University Hospital where they will interact with physicians who provide medical treatment to patients with infectious diseases. Fellows will also rotate through Broadway House, an extended care facility for HIV/AIDS patients located near the Newark campus, and the out-patient University Hospital Infectious Diseases Clinic (Unit 6). During these rotations, Fellows will provide oral screenings in both facilities and appropriately refer patients for comprehensive dental management. Fellows will participate in a very active operating room program for dental patients with extensive treatment plans and/or significant medical problems. The didactic program during the Fellowship includes weekly sessions of journal club, case presentations, treatment planning discussions, pathology case conferences, and lectures on advanced topics in restorative dentistry. Fellows also attend Oral Medicine Grand Rounds weekly, where patient cases are discussed and relevant topics are reviewed. Faculty within the Division of Oral Medicine are active in clinical and basic research and encourage Fellows to participate in research during their program. PROGRAM GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:
